Valentine’s Day History

The history of Valentine’s Day intertwines ancient pagan and religious traditions. Early revelers celebrated Lupercalia, the original holiday for lovers, on Feb. 15 in ancient Roman times. This lusty holiday honored fertility and life and likely entailed the pairing off of willing mates. With the rise of Christianity, this holiday became a little tamer, with various stories emerging about Saint Valentine. In one case, he was an imprisoned saint who sent secret messages (Valentines) from his cell. In another, he was a priest who performed secret weddings, thus becoming the patron saint of love.Philip has been busy, and several new coffee blends will be hitting the shelves in the coming months.
