Two of Rochester’s most popular beers are back on tap, just in time for Springtime weather and sipping on the deck or patio!

Hefeweizen

Hefeweizen

A classic German style wheat beer, or weissbier, Hefeweizen features prominent, but balanced, notes of banana and clove with a soft doughy wheat backbone. It’s a pale, refreshing German wheat beer with high carbonation, dry finish, a fluffy mouthfeel and a distinctive banana-and-clove yeast character. The pronunciation of “Hefeweizen” in English is roughly “HEH-vuh-VAH-tzen” or “HEH-vuh-VAH-zuhn”. The emphasis is on the first syllable, “HEH”, and the “v” sounds like a “v” in “van”.

History of Hefeweizen

While Bavaria has a wheat beer tradition dating back hundreds of years, brewing wheat beer used to be a monopoly reserved for Bavarian royalty. Modern weissbier dates from 1872 when Schneider Weissbier began production. However, pale weissbier only became popular among the masses since the 1960s. It is quite popular today, particularly in southern Germany.

Parkville Pub Ale

Parkville Pub Ale

This classic English pub ale features a biscuit and toast like malt character with a noticeable hop bitterness that blends pleasantly with the malt profile. We named our classic English Extra Special Bitter (ESB) to honor our second home in Parkville. But don’t be fooled by the name; an ESB is more balanced than bitter!

ESB History

A hallmark of English brewing In the early 20th century, ESB’s popularity soared, with breweries across the nation producing unique interpretations. However, as the mid-century approached, the rise of pale lagers led to a decline in ESB’s prominence. The beer landscape was changing, and ESB found itself temporarily overshadowed

Craft Beer Renaissance

The turning point for ESB came with the advent of the craft beer revolution in the late 20th century. As beer enthusiasts sought variety and depth of flavor, ESB experienced a remarkable resurgence. Craft breweries, both in England and abroad, began embracing this storied style, brewing their own takes on ESB and showcasing it in breweries worldwide. Craft beer pioneers in the United States, Europe and beyond put their own spin on ESB, experimenting with local ingredients and brewing techniques. This cross-pollination of ideas infused ESB with a global flair while staying true to its classic roots.

Both these popular beers are now pouring at our Parkville and Crossroads tap rooms. Stop by and enjoy a pint with your mates and raise a glass to European beer history and styles!
